शुनकायनम् - Tale of a Lost Dog

अमेरिकादेशे मिशिगन्-राज्ये नेपरपल्लिः इति एकं नगरम् । नगरे एकः कुटुम्बः । कुटुम्बे माता निर्मला तस्याः दशवर्षीयः पुत्रः विजयः अष्टवयस्का पुत्री अनिता च सुखेन वसन्ति स्म । एकदा सायङ्काले ते गन्त्र्या (by car) महामार्गे प्रयाणं कुर्वन्ति स्म । मार्गपार्श्वे शनैः वण्ठमानम् एकं शुनकम् अपश्यत् बाला अनिता | लघुगात्रं सुन्दरतनुं पिङ्गलवर्णकं शुनकं वीक्ष्य अनिता मातुः पुरतः तस्य गृहनिनीषां प्राकटयत । स्वामिरहितं तं शुनकं सानुकम्पं गृहीत्वा ते गृहं प्रत्यागच्छन् । शुनकः स्नेहपूर्णम् आश्रयं लब्ध्वा परं मुमोद । कुटुम्बोऽपि शुनकेन सह क्रीडादिभिः आनन्दितः । पशुवैद्येन शुनकस्य आरोग्यपरिक्षा अपि कारिता । एवं मासद्वयम् अतीतम् ।

ग्रीष्मर्तुः आरब्धः । निदाघकाले प्रकृतिसौन्दर्यम् अनुभवितुम् उत्तरसीमाम् आसादयन्ति अनेके मिशिगन्-वासिनः । निर्मला अपि पुत्रीपुत्रशुनकैः सहिता षड्घण्टादूरस्थं सुपीरियर्-महासरोवरतटं प्राप्ता । सरोवरतीरे शिबिरप्रदेशे अयं कुटुम्बोऽपि पटकुटीं (tent) स्थापयित्वा विश्रान्तः । शुनकः क्रीडन् कूर्दमानः शिबिरवासिनां जनानां मनोरञ्जकः अभवत् । समीपस्थः एकः पुरुषः निर्मलाम् अकथयत् "अहमपि नेपरपल्लिनगरे वसामि । तत्र चापेल्-मार्गस्थे आपणे लुम्बितशुनकस्य पुनरीप्सया स्थापितं भावचित्रमेकं दृष्टवान् । अयं शुनकः समानरूपः दृश्यते" इति । तन्निशम्य शुनके स्नेष्णिह्यमानौ अनिताविजयौ तस्य विरहभयावृतौ जातौ ।

सरोवरविहारात् प्रत्यागत्य निर्मला तं पुरुषोक्तम् आपणम् अगच्छत् । तत्र चित्रे दत्तं शुनकेष्विणः सम्पर्कं दूरवाण्या कृतवती । सः एकदा मार्गक्रमणसमये स्वशुनकः वाहनाद् उत्क्षिप्य अदृश्योऽभवद् इति पालितपशुहानिप्रसङ्गं श्रावितवान् । निर्मला तं स्वगृहम् शुनकस्य परामर्शनार्थम् आह्वयत् । मासद्वयकालं शुनकमैत्रिभावरता अनिता शुनकेन पूर्वस्वामिसम्बन्धः विस्मृतः स्याद् इति अभ्यलषत् । अपरस्मिन् दिने शुनकदिदृक्षुः निर्मलायाः गृहं प्राप्तः स्वपुत्रेण साकम् । वाहनद्वारमुद्घाट्य आगच्छन्तं पूर्वस्वामिपुत्रं जातहर्षः शुनकः विलोडितपुच्छः अभ्यद्रुवत् । सः स्वामिदारकोऽपि चिरवियोगसङ्गतमुदया शुनकमालिङ्ग्य तं पर्यष्वजत् । शुनकप्राप्तिसन्तुष्टः सः पुरुषः निर्मलायै किञ्चित् पारितोषिकधनं प्रदातुम् ऐष्यत् । परन्तु निर्मला पारितोषिकधनं निराकुर्वती यदीच्छसि तर्हि शतडालरमितं पशुवैद्याय दत्तं शुल्कं देहि इत्यवदत् । सः पुरुषः इदानीं तावत् धनं समीपे नास्तीत्युक्त्वा शुनकमादाय ततः निर्गतः ।

शुनकवञ्चिता खिन्नहृदया अनिता अन्यमेकं शुनकम् आपणात् क्रेतुं मातरं बहुवारं प्रार्थयत । तथापि निर्मला शुनकपालनं कष्टकरम् इति दुहितुरनुरोधनं न्यवारयत् । सप्ताहद्वयानन्तरं शुनकस्वामिप्रेषितं पत्रमेकं निर्मलायाः गृहम् आगतम् । किमिदमिति निर्मला तत् पत्रम् उद्घाट्य पश्यति चेत् तस्मिन् पञ्चशतडालरधनम् आसीत् । दृष्ट्वा मूकविस्मिताः कुटुम्बिनः सर्वे । अनिता अवदत् "धनमिदानीं पर्याप्तम् । अस्माभिः नूतनशुनकः सर्वथा क्रेतव्यः एव" इति । निर्मला उपायान्तरम् अपश्यन्ती पशुविक्रीणनस्थानात् नूतनं बालशुनकमेकं गृहम् आनयत् । अनिताविजयौ नूतनमित्रं सम्पाद्य संतुष्टौ अभवताम् ।

Neparapalli is a town in the Michigan state of USA. A family libed in that town. The family had mother Nirmala, her 10-year old son Vijay and 8-year old Anita living happily. Once in the evening, they were traveling by car on a highway. Anita saw a dog which was walking slowly alone on the road-side. Seeing the dog which was small, beautiful and brown-colored, the girl Anita showed her desire in front of her mother to take the dog home. With compassion, they took home the ownerless dog. The dog also was happy by obtaining the friendly shelter. Thee family also enjoyed playing with the dog. The dog's health check up was done by a veterinarian. Like this, two months passed.

The summer started. In the summer time, to experience the beauty of the nature, many Michigan state residents visit the north boundary (of the state). Nirmala also with her daughter, son and the dog got to the Superior Lake that was six-hour-drive away. The family set up a tent in the camp area on the banks of the lake and rested. The dog with its playing and jumping was entertaining for the people at the camp. The man who was nearby said to Nirmala “I also live in the town of Neparapalli”. There in the shop on Chapel Road, I saw a picture of a lost dog which was wanted back. This dogs looks similar.” Hearing that, Anita and Viaya who loved the dog, got fearful of losing it.

After returning from the visit to the lake, Nirmala went to the shop told by that man. Over the phone, she contacted the person indicated in the picture. That person narrated the incident how he lost his pet like during a road travel, his dog jumped out of the vehicle and disappeared. Nirmala invited him to her house to check the dog. Being acquainted with the dog for a period two months, Anita wished that the dog had forgotten its previous owner.  Next day, the person willing to take a look at the dog got to Nirmala’s house with his son. The dog wagging his tail ran towards the son of the previous owner, who was coming in after opening the vehicle’s door. The owner’s son also embraced and petted the dog, with the joy of meeting it after a long separation. Being happy of getting the dog back, the person wanted to give Nirmala some gift amount. But Nirmala, declining the gift amount, said “if you want, then pay me the veterenarian’s fee of one hundred dollars”. Saying that that much money was not with him at present, the person took the dog and left from there.

Having lost the dog and sad, Anita many times prayed her mother to buy a different dog from shop. Even then, Nirmala declined her daughter’s requests saying that keeping a dog was difficult. After two weeks, a letter sent by the owner of the dog came to Nirmala’s house. Nirmala wondering about it, when opened the letter and saw, there were five hundred dollars in it. By seeing it, all the family members were surpirsed. Anita said “this money is enough. A new dog must be certainly bought by us.” Nirmala not finding a way out, brought a new dog from pet’s market. Obtaining the new friend, Anita and Vijay became happy.
