ग्रामे एकः पुरुषः आसीत् | तस्य नाम गोपालः | सः परमनारायणभक्तः | एकदा सः देवदर्शनम् इच्छति | तस्मिन् काले लोकयानं किमपि न आसीत् | शकटयानेन मन्दिरं गच्छति | मार्गः मृण्मयः आसीत् | मध्ये बहु वृष्टिः भवति | तदा मार्गे पङ्कः भवति | पङ्के शकटयानस्य चक्रम् अधः गच्छति | शकटयानं स्थगितं भवति | यदि गोपालः शकटं किञ्चित् नुदति चेत् चक्रं बहिः आगच्छति | परन्तु सः अधः न आगच्छति | शकटे एव उपविशति | देवं प्रार्थयति “हे नारायण, मम साहाय्यं करोतु” इति | वृष्टिः पतति एव | तदा एकः कृषिकः आगच्छति | सः समीपं आगत्य गोपालं वदति “भवतः शकटयानं स्थगितम् अस्ति | अहं साहाय्यं करोमि वा शकटं नुदामि वा?” इति | तदा गोपालः वदति “भवान् किं मम साहाय्यं करोति | भगवान् नारायणः मम साहाय्यं करोति | भवान् गच्छतु” इति | सः कृषिकः गच्छति |

अधिकवृष्टिः पतति | जलम् उपरि आगच्छति | शकटस्य उपरि छदिः अस्ति | तस्य उपरि गोपालः उपविशति | पुनः सः देवं प्रार्थयति “हे नारायण, मम रक्षणं करोतु” इति | एका नौका आगच्छति | नौकायाम् एकः आरक्षकः अस्ति | सः समीपम् आगत्य वदति “इदानीं बहु वृष्टिः भवति | जलप्रवाहः भवति | भवान् मम नौकायां आगच्छ | भवतः रक्षणं भवति” इति | तदा गोपालः वदति “भवान् किं साहाय्यं करोति | नारायणः मम रक्षणं करोति | भवान् गच्छतु” इति | सः आरक्षकः गच्छति |

पुनः अधिकवृष्टिः भवति | अधिकजलम् उपरि आगच्छति | समीपे एकः वृक्षः भवति | वृक्षस्य शाखायां गोपालः उपविशति | सर्वत्र जलप्रवाहः भवति | सः प्रार्थयति “हे नारायण, आगच्छतु | मम साहाय्यं करोतु” इति | किञ्चित् समये एकं लघु विमानम् उपरि आगच्छति | विमानचालकः वदति “सर्वत्र जलप्रवाहः अस्ति | अहं भवतः साहाय्यं करोमि | एकां रज्जुम् अधः स्थापयामि | भवान् रज्जुं गृह्णातु | अहम् उपरि विकर्षणं करोमि | भवान् उपरि विमाने आगच्छतु” इति | तदा गोपालः वदति “मम साहाय्यं भगवान् नारायणः करोति | भवान् गच्छतु” इति | विमानचालकः अपि गच्छति |

अधिकप्रवाहः भवति | वृक्षः जले पतति | गोपालः जले मग्नः भवति | सः मरणं प्राप्नोति | नारायणभक्तः सः वैकुण्ठं गच्छति | तत्र गोपालः नारायणं नमस्करोति | सः नारायणं पृच्छति “अहं पुनः पुनः भवन्तम् आहूतवान् | परन्तु भवान् मम साहाय्यं कर्तुं न आगतवान् | किमर्थं मम रक्षणं न कृतवान्” इति | तदा भगवान् नारायणः वदति “अहम् एकवारं न - त्रिवारम् आगतवान् भवतः रक्षणार्थम्” इति | गोपालः आश्चर्येण उक्तवान् “कथम्? कदा आगतवान्? अहं न दृष्टवान्” इति | तदा नारायणः उक्तवान् “यदा आरम्भे पङ्के शकटं स्थगितं तदा भवान् किमपि प्रयत्नं न कृतवान् | अहं कृषिकरूपेण आगतवान् | अनन्तरम् अहम् आरक्षकरूपेण आगतवान् | तदा अपि भवान् साहाय्यं निराकृतवान् | अनतरं विमानचालकरूपेण अहम् आगतवान् | तदा अपि भवान् साहाय्यं निराकृतवान् | अहं भवतः साहाय्यं कर्तुं बहुप्रयत्नं कृतवान् | परन्तु भवान् किमपि प्रयत्नं न कृतवान् | मम साहाय्यम् अपि निराकृतवान्” इति | नारायणस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा गोपालः लज्जितः |

English Translation:
This is not word-to-word translation, but translation at the sentence level, keeping the English language structure in mind.

There was a person in a village. His name was Gopal. He was an ardent devotee of Narayana. Once he wishes to see God (idol). In those times, there was not any kind of public transport. He goes to the temple by cart. The road was muddy. In the meantime, it rains a lot. Then the road becomes slushy with dirt. The wheel of the cart goes down in the dirt. The cart stops. If Gopal pushes the cart a little bit then then the wheel would come out. But he does not get down. He sits in the cart only. He prays god - “Hey Narayana, help me”. The rain continues to fall. Then a farmer comes by. He comes close and says to Gopal - “Your cart is stuck. May I help you, or may I push your cart?” Then Gopal says - “What help can you give me? God Narayana will help me. You may go”. The farmer goes away.

More rain falls. The water rises. There is a cover over the cart. Gopal sits on that cover. He prays to God again “Hey Narayana, protect me”. A boat comes. In the boat, there is a policeman, He comes close and says “There is lot raining now. There is flood. You come into my boat I will rescue you”. Then Gopal says “What help will you do to me? Narayana will rescue me. You may go”. The policeman goes away.

Again it rains more. More water rises. There is a tree nearby. Gopal sits on a branch of the tree. There is flood everywhere. He prays “Hey Narayana, come, help me”. After sometime, a small airplane comes over. The pilot says “There is flood everywhere. I will help you. I will put a rope down. You catch the rope. I will pull you up. You come up into the plane”. Then Gopal says “God Narayana will help me. You may go”. The pilot also goes away.

Flood increases. The tree falls into the water. Gopal drowns in the water. He dies. (Being a) Devotee of the god, he goes to Vaikuntha. There he bows to Narayana. He asks Narayana “I called you again and again. But you did not come to help me. Why did not you rescue me?” The God Narayana says “Not once, but I came thrice to rescue you”. Gopal surprised said “How? When did you come? I did not see you”. Then Narayana said “In the beginning when the cart was stuck in the dirt, then you did not do any effort. I came in the form of a farmer. Then I came in the form of a policeman. Then also you refused the help. Afterwards, I came in the form of a pilot. Then also you refused the help. I tried a lot to help you. But you did not do any effort. You also refused my help”. Hearing Narayana’s words, Gopal was ashamed.
